Robotics - The Iron Legends

FIRST Robotics Club

The FIRST Robotics Club at North Side High School gives students the opportunity to explore engineering, technology and innovation through hands-on robotics. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization that challenges students from kindergarten through high school to design, build and compete with robots.

Through technical projects and friendly competition, students develop skills in problem-solving, communication, leadership and teamwork while connecting with industry professionals and scholarship programs.

Iron Legends Team #9119

North Side’s Iron Legends Team #9119 competes at the high school level through the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), joining thousands of teams worldwide. Each January, FIRST announces a new competition challenge. Students then work together to design, construct and program a fully functional robot before competition season begins. Students collaborate on:
  • Robot design and engineering
  • Programming and technology
  • Strategy and problem-solving
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
Competition & Achievements

The Iron Legends compete in two regional FRC competitions each year, with opportunities to advance to Indiana State and World Championship competitions.
Recent accomplishments include:
  • 2026 Mishawaka Regional Competition: Finished high enough to become an alliance captain for the semifinals
  • 2026 Columbus Regional Competition: Improved from 35th place to 6th place, earning alliance captain honors and advancing to the Indiana State Competition
  • 2026 Columbus Regional Competition: Received the Rising Star Award
  • Previous achievements include Rookie of the Year honors and the FROST Trophy for hosting the first FIRST Robotics Competition in Northeast Indiana
Building Connections Beyond the Classroom

Students work alongside mentors and community partners who help guide the engineering process and expose students to future opportunities in STEM careers. These experiences help students explore pathways in engineering, programming, manufacturing and technology.
